Pet essentials

Pet essentials here means the things you replace or rely on every week, not a costume and not a gadget that might annoy the neighbors. A box, moving water, a chew that lasts, a toothbrush, bowls off the floor, and pads for the messy stretch cover more real days than a bark box does. We left automatic litter and bark deterrents off this page because they fail often enough that they are not essentials. Match the size to the animal you actually have.
Large open litter box with a scoop
A large open box with high sides is the default for one big cat. Buy the robot box only if you will maintain it. This one cannot break.
Stainless cat fountain, 74 ounces
A steel fountain is for cats who ignore a still bowl. It only stays an essential if you rinse it. Otherwise it is a science project.
Yak cheese chews, medium, one pound
Yak chews are for a medium dog that finishes soft treats in a minute. They are still a choking risk when the piece gets small, and they are a bad idea for a puppy or a gulper.
Dog toothbrush and toothpaste
The dental kit is essential only if the dog lets you brush. If they will not, this is not the hill. Ask a vet what they will tolerate.
Raised dog bowls, adjustable stand
Raised bowls help some small and medium dogs. Skip them if a vet wants the bowls on the floor, or if the dog is a large breed this stand was not built for.
Puppy pads, 100 count
A hundred pads is a training or recovery stash, not a forever plan. Once the dog can hold it, the pads should stop being the routine.
